Hiker Public Profile

Roy

I have hiked 58 of the 65 East Bay Regional Parks. Pictures are at http://www.flickr.com/photos/sfbaywalk/collections/72157625935297892/

I would like to have other people along on these hikes due to physical limitations.

In earlier years, I walked around San Francisco Bay, and walked from that route to the high points of ten counties. http://www.sfbaywalk.com/

Organizer for These Hiking Groups

  • Bay Area Birders
  • Group description: This group is for birding people in the San Francisco Bay area. I figure we can open it to everyone. I will not be the "leader", but I hope that each of you will step forward now and then to lead some kind of outing. Roy

  • Group description: East Bay has some great hikes. The weather is warmer than San Francisco and the terrain is usually different than North Bay Muir Woods area. It is also pretty convenient for people who live in East Bay because they do not have to cross any bridges!

  • Windy Hill Open Space Preserve Trail Hike
  • Hike description: Note the time change to 11:00 a.m. This will be a joint hike with the Bay Area Arts and Outdoors Meetup Group. The hike will begin at the parking lot off Portola Road, about 1 mile west of Alpine Road. We'll meet at the end of the parking lot near the trailhead at 11:00 a.m., and begin walking at about 11:10. We'll walk about 3 miles up Spring Ridge Trail to Anniversary Trail, pause to take in the panoramic views, and then return on Spring Ridge Trail. DISTANCE: about 6 miles ELEVATION GAIN: 1,200 feet DIFFICULTY: Moderate PACE: Moderate DURATION: 3 to 3-1/2 hours, including pauses Notes: * The weather forecast currently looks good for next weekend, but because of this week's rain, sections of the trail will be muddy. Hiking shoes with some tread are advised. * Bring layers of warm clothes. * Although considered moderate in difficulty, this trail does require a steady climb of about 1,200 feet. * Bring water and some food. If the weather is warm enough, we'll...

  • Arrowhead Marsh Bird Walk
  • Hike description: This walk is by Arrowhead Marsh near the Oakland Airport. The area is popular with birders because of winter waterfowl population, and frequent sighting of California Clapper Rails. We meet at 1:00 pm in the main parking lot. From 880, head toward the Oakland Airport. Turn right at Pardee Drive, then left on Swan Way, and right to enter the park. Ignore the first 2 parking areas, and continue to the end of the road by the observation tower. Approach the water. I will be sitting on the fishing dock, wearing a dorky white hat with a cape. High tide is at 1:42 pm, offering a good change of seeing a clapper rail or two. If that fails, we can try again in the late afternoon. Meanwhile, we can wander about various pond and shoreline areas to observe a variety of waterfowl. Here is a link to park information and a park map. http://www.ebparks.org/parks/mlk All walking is level and paved. Bicycles are allowed. Distance depends on what we care to do. The loop around the New Marsh and seasonal p...
