VP hikers,

This Sunday is a special surprise birthday party for Norm. Phyllis Anderson and Cheryl Soshnik have dreamed up a fun day for Norm and us at Green's Basin, in Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Norm doesn't have email, so he won't see this and his wife will make sure he is hiking Sunday.

OUR GROUP WILL BE MEETING and LEAVING AT 9:30 A.M. (try to come 15 minutes early, please read Phyllis's notes below)

We are meeting at the 6200 South Park-n-Ride, off Wasatch Blvd. This is NOT the parking lot at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. It's the one just north of the sand pit.

Things to remember for Steve's Group:

This is a SURPRISE birthday hike for Norm. This is a SURPRISE "Gourmet Hike" for Norm.

Please read carefully as the plans are somewhat involved :-)

Part 1

This Sunday, Oct. 23, we will hike to Green's Basin from the Days Fork trailhead. If folks want to go further, they can continue to Upper Greens (but I think you'll prefer the gourmet lunch!) We will meet at 9:30 at the 6200 South Park and Ride. At least, that is what we're telling Norm. However, we will have a birthday cake at the park and ride, so come early if you can -- like by 9:15. We will have a little birthday celebration before we leave the parking lot. If you want to save your cake to eat with lunch, bring something to pack it in you backpack.

We have celebrated Norm's previous birthdays in the parking lot before, so hopefully he will think that is it. BUT KEEP READING!

Part 2

This gourmet hike will be advertised to WMC members. That group of hikers will meet Mark Jones and Cheryl Soshnik at the mouth of BCC at 9:00. They will go to Green's Basin beforehand and set up the lunch spot. Our hope is that Norm will get a second, and bigger, surprise when he finds more people waiting in Green's Basin with a spread of food.

For those not familiar with the Gourmet Ski Tour or the Gourmet Snowshoe, these are lunches where everyone brings something to share. Can be appetizers, nuts, prepared food, wine, goodies, etc., etc. Whatever suits your fancy. People have even been known to 'dress' for these events. The weather is supposed to be beautiful, so come prepared to enjoy a lengthy lunch with lots of imaginitive food. We did not try to organize a gift, but showering Norm with cards would be fun if you want to stick one in your pack.
