General Information
One of the most popular hiking and wildlife destinations in the Napa Valley area around St. Helena is Bothe Napa Valley State Park. While there are many easy and moderate hikes, those seeking adventure will find it in some of the trails that escalate up to the 2000 foot elevation. The park is designed to offer plenty to everyone. It has lots of rugged and difficult terrain, and on one side of the park there is a fully developed area for picnics and families to enjoy.
The developed area of the Bothe Napa Valley park is largely wheelchair-accessible, has plenty of picnic spots, camping areas, and even a swimming pool. There are small fees for camping and vehicle entry.
The Bothe Napa Valley park was not open to the public until quite recently. Until 1960, the park was a private resort called Paradise Park, owned by Reinhold Bothe.
In total, there are about ten miles of hiking trails. The trails wind along sloping hillsides and through redwood tree groves that only grow in Northern California due to its unique climate. The redwood forests are able to grow about 30 miles inland because during the dry season, they get their water from the fog that comes in from the ocean. The trees are able to sustain their gigantic size because they get the extra fog moisture nutrients.

Hiking
Trails
- History Trail (1.2 miles) - from the picnic area the trail passes the Pioneer Cemetery, after which there is a three-way junction. The middle path of the junction heads up sharply through a mixed forest. From the peak of the trail, the hike goes down to Mill Creek and passes a stone dam, after which it reaches the Grist Mill. The trails in this park do not loop, so hikers just retrace their original path to get back.
- Coyote Peak Trail (1.5 miles) - starting from Ritchey Creek, this hike climbs up to 1170 feet to a point from which hikers can oversee Napa Valley
- Ritchey Canyon Trail (3.9 miles) - a hike along a stream, which gets harder as the hikers move further when the trail becomes more difficult and leads into a small canyon. Along the Richey Canyon Trail are other smaller hikes like Redwood Trail (1 mile) and The South Fork Trail (.9 mile)
- For easy walks, try the Petrified Forest Loop. The trail is a quarter-mile long and can be walked as many times as is comfortable for the hikers. The hike is in the developed part of the park

The Bothe Napa Park is home to a number of birds, coyotes, deer, fox and even bobcats. There are more than 100 different bird species like hawks (Red Tail Hawk), quail and woodpeckers. If you are hiking with small children, keep an eye on them and teach them and make sure they understand how to behave if they encounter the park animals while hiking.

The Bothe Napa Valley Park is a wonderful place to visit as there are plenty of wineries and entertainment around. If you have extra time, the nature and scenery of the park is a great escape from the wine-tasting crowds.

Description: This hike near Cupertino, in one of the most popular parks on the peninsula/south bay, offers great views of the bay area. Bring plenty of your favorite beverage, sun protection, and lunch or a snack. We'll hike to the bench at the top of the PG&E trail. Directions: From 280 just north of 85, take Foothill Blvd. toward the hills, right at the first light onto Cristo Rey Dr., then around and out the far side of the traffic circle. Turn left when you see the sign for Rancho San Antonio County Park. Follow the entrance road to the right past several parking areas, then left down the hill to a bigger parking area. If that's full, park in one of the lots back up the hill.
Shipwreck Hunt During Low Tide | 53 km away

Description: The original shipwreck hunt was a very popular event, so we are scheduling another event to see the two ships that can be spotted in the ocean during low tide! We will meet at: 870 El Camino Del Mar, San Francisco, California That is the trailhead. The hike is 2 miles each way. The terrain is pretty easy, but in the middle there are few mid-sized hills. One ship is during the middle of the hike and the other ship is at the end of the hike. The event is free, but donations on the site or at the event are appreciated since it takes a lot of time and effort to organize the event. We will meet at the Arguello Gate, walk along the Ecology Trail, then through the army base to see the old Officers Homes and a display of historic cannons used by the army. Presidio Ridge Trail To Golden Gate Bridge | 52.9 km away

Arrowhead Marsh Bird Walk | 57.8 km away

Description: This walk is by Arrowhead Marsh near the Oakland Airport. The area is popular with birders because of winter waterfowl population, and frequent sighting of California Clapper Rails. We meet at 1:00 pm in the main parking lot. From 880, head toward the Oakland Airport. Turn right at Pardee Drive, then left on Swan Way, and right to enter the park. Ignore the first 2 parking areas, and continue to the end of the road by the observation tower. Approach the water. I will be sitting on the fishing dock, wearing a dorky white hat with a cape. High tide is at 1:42 pm, offering a good change of seeing a clapper rail or two. If that fails, we can try again in the late afternoon. Meanwhile, we can wander about various pond and shoreline areas to observe a variety of waterfowl.
