General Information
The Armstrong Redwood park is a State Reserve designated for wildlife preservation that spans approximately 805 acres. In case you are wondering, an acre is approximately 4,000sq meters. A curious fact about some of the trees in the Armstrong Redwood park is that some of the trees appear burned out from the inside. These are called goosepens. If you think the name does not make sense, it is because the name was given a very long time ago when the local farmers kept geese inside the actual trees.
There have been a number of wildfires in the Armstrong Redwood park area and due to the anatomy of the tree, the fire burned at the base of the trees much more easily. If the fire found a hole in the tree, it would make its way inside the tree and that resulted in the entire burning out of the inside of the tree. The outside of the tree, on the other hand, is covered by bark which insulates the redwood, especially further up the tree - so the outside parts of the trees remain intact.
Trailheads
Trailhead Name: Armstrong Redwoods Ridge Trail at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve
Trailhead Description: To get to the trailhead: From downtown Guerneville on Main St. (Highway 116), drive 2.3 miles north on Armstrong Woods Road to the visitor center on the right, just before the state park entrance station. Park in the large lot on the right by the visitor center.

Hiking
The enormous redwoods trees can grow at different rates in different parts of the park. Contrary to popular belief, it is not always best for a tree to get the most exposure to the elements for proper development.
If the tops of the trees are exposed to drying winds and full sun, the trees grow only an inch or so per year. The ideal conditions for redwoods are partial shade and partial exposure to the elements. In such conditions they can grow two or three feet in a year.
Trails
- Easy 1 Mile hike along the Pioneer Trail from the park entrance to the Armstrong Tree and Forest Theater. To return, just repeat the hike backwards
- Easy 1.7 Mile hike along the Pioneer Trail from the park entrance to the Armstrong Tree, then further to the picnic area. To return, just retrace the trail in the opposite direction
- Moderate difficulty 2.2 Mile hike with a 400' climb - use the East Ridge Trail from the front parking lot to the picnic area and take the Pioneer Trail to go back to the starting point
- Moderate 2.3 mile hike with a 500' climb. To go on this hike, take the Pioneer Trail from the park entrance to the Armstrong Tree. Once you hit the Pool Ridge Trail, take that to the picnic area. Take the Pioneer Trail to get back
- Another moderately difficulty trail is 3.3 miles. Start at the East Ridge trail from the front parking lot to the picnic area. After that, take the Pool Ridge Trail to the Armstrong Tree and return to the entrance via the Pioneer
- For those looking for more difficult hikes, why not combine a number of different trails and make the hike your own
- A difficult hike can be 9 Miles with 1500' climb. This is for the risk takers out there. Start on the East Ridge trail from the front parking lot to Bullfrog Pond campground. This is a long trail, so make sure you are well-prepared with foods, liquids, proper clothing and maps.

Description: This hike near Cupertino, in one of the most popular parks on the peninsula/south bay, offers great views of the bay area. Bring plenty of your favorite beverage, sun protection, and lunch or a snack. We'll hike to the bench at the top of the PG&E trail. Directions: From 280 just north of 85, take Foothill Blvd. toward the hills, right at the first light onto Cristo Rey Dr., then around and out the far side of the traffic circle. Turn left when you see the sign for Rancho San Antonio County Park. Follow the entrance road to the right past several parking areas, then left down the hill to a bigger parking area. If that's full, park in one of the lots back up the hill.

One ship is during the middle of the hike and the other ship is at the end of the hike. The event is free, but donations on the site or at the event are appreciated since it takes a lot of time and effort to organize the event. Presidio Ridge Trail To Golden Gate Bridge | 59.2 km away

Arrowhead Marsh Bird Walk | 68.5 km away

Description: This walk is by Arrowhead Marsh near the Oakland Airport. The area is popular with birders because of winter waterfowl population, and frequent sighting of California Clapper Rails. We meet at 1:00 pm in the main parking lot. From 880, head toward the Oakland Airport. Turn right at Pardee Drive, then left on Swan Way, and right to enter the park. Ignore the first 2 parking areas, and continue to the end of the road by the observation tower. Approach the water. I will be sitting on the fishing dock, wearing a dorky white hat with a cape. High tide is at 1:42 pm, offering a good change of seeing a clapper rail or two. If that fails, we can try again in the late afternoon. Meanwhile, we can wander about various pond and shoreline areas to observe a variety of waterfowl.
